Carlos Yulo makes history again as the first Filipino gymnast to win multiple medals in the world championships after capturing gold in the mens’ vault event and silver in parallel bars tournament in the 50th Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) Artistic Gymnastics World Championships at Kitakyushu, Japan last October 24.

The gymnastics star failed to defend his world championship title due to an out-of-bounds landing during his routine that cost him a 0.3 penalty in his signature event, floor exercise. After his failed titular defense, the first Southeast Asian world champion male gymnast jumps off the springboard to bounce back in his second event.

The 21-year old Olympian garnered an average score of 14.916 to clinch the gold medal on the apparatus, where he placed fourth in the Tokyo Olympics. He performed an almost flawless Kasamatsu double twist to record 14.800 in his first attempt. In his final vault, Caloy delivered a well-executed Dragulescu leap, considered one of the most difficult elements on vault, to register 15.033, with the highest execution grade of 9.433 to be crowned as the new world champion.

Yonekura Hidenobu, the pride of Japan, settled for silver with a total of 14.866. Meanwhile, Israel’s Andrey Medvedev landed in the third spot to claim bronze, averaging 14.649.

Succeeding his vault triumph, he caps off his world championship campaign with a silver finish in the parallel bars competition. Yulo immediately set the bar high as he tallied 15.300, 8.900 in execution, and 6.400 in difficulty to lead the early part of the game.

Chinese Hu Xuwei, the sixth participant to compete, swings to the top after listing 15.466 to edge out the 4-foot-11 gymnast and bag the world title. Hu’s fellow Chinese gymnast Shi Cong, notched the bronze at 15.066.

The two-time world champion seeks a podium finish in the 2024 Paris Olympics after nearly medaling in his Olympic debut last August.
