You may think that paper straws are eco-friendly, but a new study reveals that they are actually harmful for you and the planet.
In this day and age, various inventions are being made for the betterment of the environment. We’ve seen these in inventions like solar panels, solar-powered batteries, anti-pollutant tires, edible cutlery, even paper straws, and a lot more! Using these products help in reducing wastes and promotes the use of recycling.
However, researchers from Belgium recently discovered that one of these eco-friendly products is harmful for the environment and for the health of the users. Specifically, paper straws. In their first analysis, the Belgian researchers tested different straws for the group of synthetic chemicals known as poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS are used to make everyday products such as stain and water-resistant fabrics, cleaning products, and non-stick pans.
The research team purchased 39 brands of different straws made from different materials – paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, and plastic. Straws that are mostly used in fast-food restaurants were tested twice. The findings revealed that most of the brands examined had PFAS present, with a total of 18 different compounds detected. Among all the straws tested, paper straws are most likely to contain PFAS, with chemicals detected in 90% of the brand. PFAS were also detected in 80% brands of bamboo straws, 75% on plastic straws, and 40% on glass straws. Notably, none of the stainless steel brands showed any traces of PFAS.
Additionally, the researchers also identified “ultra-short chain” PFAS, which are highly soluble in water, suggesting that they could potentially mix with beverages. It is worth noting that while PFAS concentrations were low, people tend to use straws only occasionally. However, PFAS can persist in the body for many years, and their concentrations can accumulate over time. This emphasizes the importance of considering long-term exposure to these substances.
Various epidemiological studies have revealed that exposure to PFAS can lead to negative health effects such as altered immune and thyroid function, liver disease, lipid and insulin dysregulation, kidney disease, and cancer. PFAS not only causes negative effects in human health but also in our wildlife and environment. These substances break down slowly over time and they can persist for thousands of years, the reason why they are known as: “forever chemicals”.
Experts are suggesting to refrain the use of straws to minimize its negative impact on the environment. Nonetheless, if it’s really necessary, you might want to use reusable straws like stainless steel straws. These alternatives offer great durability and also lack harmful chemicals like PFAS. By making small changes like this, we can all do our part in protecting the environment.
