AI as a Tool: Developing a Negative Dependency

As the world confronts the future, technology becomes more advanced and many innovations emerge, like Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI. This tool is widely used in offices, especially in schools, where students are mostly the ones who use AI. However, is it good for them to always rely on AI? Can AI be considered good for the life of people?

People nowadays use AI to make their work and assignments faster and easier. According to a 2023 Turnitin-sponsored poll conducted by Tyton, during the month of spring, 9% of the faculty members and 27% of the students used AI as a writing tool. By the month of fall, the percentage had risen, with the faculty rising to 22% and the students jumping to 49%. This data indicates that there has been a rise in using AI between faculty members and students, with the students having a higher likelihood of using AI.

Artificial Intelligence can be a good help for everyone today, especially since there are different AI online platforms that anyone has access to, one of which is ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a tool operated by AI technology that allows individuals to have conversations that are similar to those of humans with the chatbot. This AI platform aids individuals greatly with tasks including the composition of codes, emails, and essays. By doing this, one can simplify their task.

“Use AI as a tool, not as a ghostwriter,” said Ed Lingao, a broadcast journalist on TV5. Artificial Intelligence like ChatGPT should be treated as a tool rather than a ghostwriter. It should not function as an unseen writer, performing tasks that humans are fully capable of, such as composing essays and emails. This kind of AI should be used only where it can help people improve their skills in writing, grammar, and punctuation. If people always rely on AI, it may lead to lower proficiency as individuals will lose the ability to write effectively. Human strength lies in citing facts and digesting information comprehensively, a skill that surpasses the capabilities of AI.

This kind of platform would be a great help to everyone, especially to the students, in writing their assignments, essays, papers, and many more. However, this should only be used as a guide for them to improve their writing skills, such as their punctuation and grammar. Every individual has a voice that AI does not have, and they should not waste it. It is crucial not to let AI lead an individual into danger because people may become ignorant as an outcome. Specifically, if they become dependent on it and let these platforms manage their work.

Using AI is neither a terrible idea nor inherently negative, as it can serve as a helpful tool for checking grammar, punctuation, and more. When used appropriately, AI can significantly benefit individuals' lives. However, it is essential for people not to overly rely on AI for tasks that they can competently perform themselves. While AI can augment one's work, it should be considered a supplementary tool rather than a complete replacement for human capabilities.
