TRIBUTE: The Avenues of Fulfilled Aspirations

Fear. Worry. Bliss.

The constant fear of having one’s voice shoved down by silver spoon-filled lies. The worry of not being able to extract and express the truth. Bliss – of course, the joy of writing that lies within the message conveyed. Campus journalists endure all these to be the bearer of truth and the voices of the silenced.

To write is to be heard. In this chaotic world, full of surprises and stories, to have a voice and be heard could be one of the difficult things we are far from achieving. With all these opposing views and perspectives thrown at different path, it became hard to stand a ground. Amidst all these, a brave spirit rises – ready to withstand the blazing gazes and mutterings of the masses.

Another accomplished chapter is bound to be published, marking a fruitful publication year. The Escolarian Publication Year 2023-2024 stands firmly despite the challenges and criticisms faced. Behind the written posts, captured photos, and creative layouts are the dedicated individuals who have turned once-elusive dreams into reality. The friends of E will forever remember the chapter you have written – the chapter that celebrates victorious many firsts.

Published. A simple word that holds fulfilled memories, drafts here, revisions there. Several events covered, issues tackled, and news delivered. Writing is often perceived as a simple escapism. An activity that solely requires creativity. Well, that is a factor, but passion is the greatest of them all. The passion that drives one to strive for the truth. Behind the thousand words conveyed, passion arises as the words transpire truths waiting to be unveiled.  In every letter written, a voice echoes with dedication and hope for the truth to resonate, not just in the confined walls of the campus but also in the world.

As they graduate, let us travel back to their precious memories and experiences, transpiring a guiding path for campus journalists in their ongoing journey to creating and soon publishing their chapter.

Joanna Chiney Kaye Santos (Editor-in-Chief and Chief News & Opinion Editor )

I've been involved in campus journalism since elementary school, and it's a passion that has always been close to my heart. It's something I genuinely enjoy and find fulfilling. Before senior high school classes began, I decided not to join any clubs or organizations because I believed it would add too much to my academic responsibilities. However, during the application season, I found myself drawn to The Escolarian. Initially torn about whether to apply, I was scared and had many "what ifs" such as "what if hindi ako makapasok?" and "what if dumagdag pa ‘to nang sobra sa workloads ko?" Despite those hesitations, I couldn't ignore how much I missed campus journalism, especially since clubs were temporarily unavailable in my former school during grades 9 and 10. That's when I decided to apply for the organization. Initially considering a role as a copyreader, I later realized I wanted to explore something new, and that's when I applied as a news and opinion writer.

Today, I am grateful that I didn’t let my fears stop me from doing what I love: serving the school, students, and society at large by informing and educating them about important issues and current events. Being a friend of E has been incredibly fulfilling—it's one of the best choices I've ever made, and something I'll always cherish. In The Escolarian, it's more than just finding friends; it's discovering a family.

Being part of The Escolarian is a great privilege in itself. However, for me, the two best parts stood out. Firstly, I believe that The E wields significant influence within the school community. Whether through an article, a post, or even an image, we have the power to make a big impact. As the school's watchdog, our words and visuals possess the ability to effect meaningful change effortlessly. In addition, another remarkable part of being involved with The E is the incredibly strong and supportive community it fosters. The friendships made within The Escolarian stand out for our exceptional bonds and camaraderie. Being surrounded by people who appreciate journalism as much as you do is fulfilling, and being part of this organization that turned into a family is something I will always look back on.

During my two-year stay at the organization, I've found every event to be memorable, but a few stand out. One of my favorites was SIPATLAWIN 2023, held just before the SSC election day, where we provided students with crucial insights into the candidates to help them make informed voting decisions. It was one of our most extensive coverages. We held numerous meetings to ensure smooth execution, conducted exclusive interviews with each candidate beforehand, invited fellow Escolarians to join the committee to ensure fairness, and meticulously handled every aspect of the event—from hosting and sound systems to venue layout and more. Next was Inkblots 2024, held at the University of Santo Tomas. It gave us the opportunity to meet fellow campus journalists from different parts of the Philippines and esteemed individuals who have made significant contributions to the journalism industry. I gained valuable insights from the event, and it allowed us to create wonderful memories together with the Editorial Board, especially during our laughter-filled conversations and endless chikahan sa biyahe (and sa part with Cedrick Juan HAHAHA jk). Lastly, there were the post-exam chill sessions with the whole Editorial Board, sponsored by Sir Raymond hehe. As I mentioned earlier, I truly found a family in The E. Imagine, after a tiring and stressful three-day exam, Sir Ray never fails to ensure that we deserve a rest. Sobrang saya kasi we were able to enjoy each other’s company and set aside academics, even if only for a short period of time.

Throughout my two-year experience with E, I've picked up life lessons. Two in particular have left a lasting impact on me. Firstly, I've come to appreciate fearless exploration, trying new things, and learning from my mistakes. It's ingrained in my mind that taking action is always better than staying stagnant because even the smallest progress propels us forward. Secondly, I've realized the importance of being not afraid to ask for help, my journey as the EIC became much more bearable because of the people who stood behind me, willing to help me in any way they could. Being surrounded by people who motivate you forward is more rewarding than facing challenges in silence.

These lessons will be a continuing source of inspiration and guidance for me as I grow and progress. Even though my time at The E was quite the trip, each turn brought with it new experiences and lessons. Just as Helen Keller said, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all."

As Sir Raymond often refers to us as "the batch of many firsts," I can confidently say that I am leaving this organization with a significant legacy. And, as the Editor-in-Chief, I would like to encourage my fellow campus journalists to remain firm in their passionate dedication of serving our community. Be the eyes that reveal truths concealed in shadows, the ears that listen to stories untold, and the voice that speaks for the silenced. At times, challenges may seem overwhelming, and criticisms may cause you to doubt yourself. However, use those as stepping stones to a greater you, and always remember the reason that inspired you to begin. Your voice and courage bring clarity to complex issues, shape narratives, foster empathy, and ignite change. Embrace the responsibility with courage and enthusiasm, knowing that journalism is a noble pursuit that serves the greater good.

To the incoming Editorial Board members, I know that being part of this team entails both privilege and substantial responsibility, but I also know that you are capable of doing and slaying it. Who knows, perhaps you could accomplish it more skillfully than we did. You have the potential to establish a significant legacy of your own, and I am reassured knowing that E is entrusted to excellent hands. Lastly, echoing Joe Keery’s words, "just trust me, you’ll be fine."

Lagi't lagi para sa malayang pamamahayag!

Precious Sabine Pinto (Associate Editor and Chief Features Editor)

I chose The Escolarian to add excitement to my senior high school experience. Initially, I aimed to join as a News Writer, but my uncle advised that Features would better suit my writing style. Reflecting on the past two years, I see it was the best decision of my time at CEIS. Being friends with E is both an honor and a responsibility, as it involves upholding journalistic excellence for the Escolarian community, true to the organization's name. In this group, you'll gain a deep understanding of current affairs inside and outside of the bubble. Above all, The Escolarian teaches you how to be human and understand every viewpoint there is.

The best part of being in The Escolarian, besides the constant guidance and pursuit of journalistic excellence, is the bond shared within the organization. Being friends with E means you become friends with everyone. In The Escolarian, I found a family and an outlet during my time at CEIS. I've grown especially close to many of them, particularly the Editorial Board, and consider them some of my closest friends. In The Escolarian, you don't just have a community; you have a family.

My most memorable experiences as part of The Escolarian's Editorial Board are the roundtable discussions—whether they involve making critical decisions or light-hearted ones. As leaders of the organization, we must carefully consider every move we make, regardless of its significance. Therefore, we organize these discussions to brainstorm ways to improve each coverage or even just to catch up with one another. These discussions also provide opportunities to gain deeper knowledge, as engaging with fellow EB members is incredibly educational.

As a friend of E, I realized that the members of the Editorial Board are not just colleagues or organization mates; they become close friends working towards a common goal: exemplifying journalistic excellence in the Escolarian community. It is crucial to understand each other on a surface level and respect each other's decisions.

One valuable lesson from E is the importance of remaining professional. Conflicts within the organization are inevitable and normal, but they can be resolved. Professionalism is a core value for any organization, and it is vital to uphold it at all times.

Another important lesson is vigilance. The Escolarian is the official student publication of CEIS Malolos, and as one of its "caretakers," I am obliged to stay vigilant during times of need. This organization has taught me how to inquire critically and stay informed about current affairs.

These are just some of E's parting lessons, and I know I can apply them to all organizations I will join in the future.

Joining The Escolarian was one of the best decisions I ever made. The staffers, especially the Editorial Board and our technical adviser, Sir Raymond Mendoza, are some of the most amazing people I've had the privilege to meet. While I've always loved writing, discovering how to write with a greater purpose through journalism has profoundly shaped my beliefs. In this organization, I found a home—a place to turn to during both academic struggles and moments of joy. The Escolarian has given me friendships that will forever be a part of me. As we always say, "Lagi't lagi para sa malayang pamamahayag!" Maraming salamat sa pagsisilbi bilang aking tahanan, The E!

Scarlett Jaione Javier (Managing Editor)

I’ve always been interested in school publications and have always wanted to join one since I was in junior high school, but I lacked the equipment and talent to do so. But seeing how supportive and good of guidance the previous editorial board was during the time, I was considering what organization to join, I said why not? And so, here I am, 2 years into my friendship with E. It’s been a great 2 years filled with amazing opportunities and experiences. All of the events that we cover and events that we get to go to as well as being able to capture different student’s memories during the day. One of the most memorable moments was during every event that we had our booths up. Masaya mambudol ng tao. A lesson I’ve gained is that quality doesn’t always equal quantity. Thank you, The E, for all of the lessons you have given me. I hope to apply them in my future as a broadcasting student.

Maxine Reiza Lorenzo (Chief Layout Artist)

I chose The Escolarian since I was interested in journalism and have been wanting to try graphic design. Being friends with E is fulfilling, since you got to do what you love and at the same time, you gain friendship and bond outside the classroom with the staffers. Being a part of The Escolarian means being involved with every event of the school. The weeks of preparation and the event's success for me are the best part of it.

Sipat Lawin was the most memorable experience for me, the thrill and rush during the preparations, drafting and posting publication materials, and the successful coverage of the event.

Common sense na 'to, but walang pinipiling araw ang balita. Kaya kahit Linggo, dapat handa ang page mag-post ng updates or pubmats 'pag may importanteng nangyayari. Also, when writing articles or doing pubmats, 'wag lang mag-settle for the purpose entertaining, but also to inform your target audience. :))

Being a layout artist is fun and challenging at the same time. Kailangan mabilis kang makapag-isip ng design or theme to relate to the post. But I'm really glad that I got to experience being the Chief Layout Artist. With this, my designing skills have improved and talagang nasubukan rin ‘yung creative juices ko. For our next staffers and editorial board, just enjoy being friends with E, marami kayong matututuhan, rooting for all of you!

Chelsea Shayne Ricohermoso (Lead Copyreader)

I chose The Escolarian as my organization because I simply had a passion for writing when I was still in elementary in my previous school. Then I realized that I wanted to explore and so, it happened that I became the copyreader of the org. Being friends with E was fun and worth it. It was like a never-ending novel that I wished to read repeatedly to escape reality.

Being part of The Escolarian during my two years in CEIS made me gain a lot of friends through teamwork and cooperation. The articles that we made together were not just written, they were carefully thought about. The Escolarian also became an outlet for us where we can unwind from our academic responsibilities. With them, I was able to discover my strengths and weaknesses as well as what I'm really passionate about.

I think my most memorable experience as a part of E's Editorial Board might be our last meeting. We shared laughter and all the achievements we had during our term. At that time, we were choosing the new Editorial Board who would replace us and continue our legacy for the next school year. It was a very fulfilling and heart-warming experience that cannot be replaced.

As Sir Raymond would say "lagi't lagi para sa malayang pamamahayag". I have learned that words are really powerful to ignite change. A change that is very much needed at the present. Being a student-journalist was challenging as you will encounter different views and opinions, but being given the opportunity to work with my fellow orgmates made my stay worth it; and despite the hardships I have experienced in my studies, they made it more tolerable. I will forever carry on the journalistic excellence that I have developed through the years with The E.

I just want to give my genuine gratitude to E for being the organization that helped me and supported me in my passion for journalism. We may have struggled a lot during our term but we still managed to get through those hardships. With this, I can say that I'm glad that I got to know you all and I'm proud of you for everything that you have endured and achieved. For the new editorial board and staffers, I wish you all the best and I hope you continue to fulfill the legacy of the previous batches as you make your own someday. Sail away from the safe harbor and explore with all your heart's desire!

Roi Edan Victoria (Chief Sci-tech Editor)

I no longer remember, I think I joined the organization because several of my friends were submitting their applications. I would say that being friends with E is pursuing journalistic excellence as if it were second nature. As I said, I don't remember how it started or what it was like, likewise, I don't remember how things were before I joined. It became natural, writing and staying up to date on everything as a routine-- same as with being friends with anyone, it's never forced, it's organic.

Personally, I'd say that getting to know things first is my favorite part. Most of the critical news around the campus quickly reached our table, it is, however, unfortunate that we could not write about most of them.

My most memorable experience is covering events outside of the campus, MACIPRISA for example. You're not there to just watch, you're there to do your job and duty.

Don't stress out and freeze. Keep thinking of alternatives whenever shit runs your way. There will always be things that you can do, just think outside the box and deconstruct the issue until you find a fix. And in writing, "when writing about child labor, do not forget the child," a quote stated by Mrs. Kara David-Cancio, you are using numbers to magnify and escalate the issues you are writing about, but never forget that each digit corresponds to a person whose living an entire life, the news is not just the issues, its the people both affected and behind them.

Keep evolving, developing, and experimenting. Slowly but surely, let's break out from the chains of censorship.

Brianne Francesca Feliciano (Chief Sports Editor )

I chose The Escolarian because I wanted to improve my writing style. Although, I did say during grade 11 that I joined the sports section to look for "pogi" so…

The best part is the people I got to work with. I got to experience new things with people that I might have never gotten close to if not for the publication.

I got to lead the MACIPRISA and Sports Fest coverage which made a big impact on my writing and leadership skills. I learned to work under pressure without putting pressure on others.

I learned that the school publication is more than just news. We are the voice of the masses, and I would surely take that in mind when I join a student publication in college.

Inkblots was one of the most memorable moments with the EB, and I learned from there that people can learn so much more than just writing when they delve deeper into what interests them. Writing is a passion of mine, so I do my best to do better each day that passes. The E surely was a great help for me.

Ma. Victoria Mendiola (Chief Team Lead, Photojournalism)

I chose this organization because I have always been fascinated by taking pictures, and I wanted to channel this interest of mine into something productive and meaningful. My sister is also a student journalist, and I followed in her footsteps because she urged me to join The Escolarian.

Being friends with E is being in touch with your capabilities as a journalist and honing it to the best of your abilities without losing your passion in the process. The friends of E are all collectively dedicated to their pursuit of journalistic excellence while also building meaningful connections with their fellow peers.

One of my favorite aspects of being a part of The Escolarian is the amazing and dedicated team behind it, with whom I have grown to adore throughout my stay. The meaningful connections I have forged through shared passion and enthusiasm are definitely something I will treasure for a lifetime.

Being a part of The E’s Editorial Board is a humbling experience that I am grateful for. The most memorable snippet of my record as the Chief Photojournalist of the EB is probably the after-school meetings that are both productive and therapeutic for everyone involved. These sessions really prove that The Escolarian is more than an organization that highlights the fundamentals of journalism, it is also an avenue for releasing pent-up stress from academic tasks by hashing it out with fellow students who carry the same burden.

One piece of advice that I would give my fellow campus journalists is that they should not let the creative freedom and honor that come with journalism be exploited. We must always remain humble and steadfast in our pursuit of the truth, and only the truth. Our job, first and foremost, is to shed light on situations that are concealed by the oppressors. We mustn’t be complacent with half-truths, and we must not use this creative avenue for our own gain.

Throughout the course of my SHS journey, The E has remained a fundamental aspect of my growth as both a student journalist and as a human being. The hard-earned knowledge and lessons I have gained through our activities and discussions have been invaluable. I am particularly grateful for the guidance and mentorship I have received, especially to Ate Andy, for entrusting me with her previous position as the Chief Photojournalist for this batch. I am also grateful to our technical adviser, Sir Raymond, for his unyielding support towards us during our period on The E’s editorial board. Furthermore, I would like to express my gratitude to The E for being an avenue for forging friendships with people who share the same passion as I do, and for granting me the opportunity to achieve my aspirations to be part of a school publication. Each interaction and collaboration has deepened my appreciation for the importance and core values of journalism, as well as the significance of a strong and supportive community. As our term comes to an end, I would like to express my sincerest thanks to The E for fostering such an inclusive and inspiring environment, and for continuously encouraging its members’ individual and collective aspirations. Truly, my time with E will remain as one of my treasured memories from high school that I will fondly look back to.

Ava Victoria Tan (Social Media Manager)

The best part of being in The Escolarian is the organization itself, we treat each other as family while keeping professionalism at the same time. Working with people in this organization made me understand the importance of respecting each other. I am glad to be a part of this family and will forever treasure the memories and friendships that we have!

I think the most memorable part of being part of The Escolarian is the event “Sipat Lawin”, it is a miting de avance hosted by our organization that I hope the future editorial board will continue. It was a great experience because we could know the real reasons behind every candidate’s willingness to serve the student body. It is also beneficial for every Escolarian as it is a way for them to vote for the most deserving candidates.

There are many lessons learned from this experience, and one is consistency, I am glad that our technical adviser is always reminding us that every event is important. Covering event after event will make you feel overwhelmed and tired, but with the passion to be consistent in delivering journalistic excellence, you will always find yourself posting on social media what is happening now. This value will not only apply to being a campus journalist, but it will also benefit you in life, for consistency in everything is a great value to apply to have greater outcomes.

Roxcele Anthonea Lachica (Social Media Manager and Radio Broadcaster)

I never had the chance to try joining campus journalism in junior high school, so I decided that when I entered senior high school, I would join an organization like The Escolarian.

Probably the comfort of doing and partaking in something other than academics made joining all worth it. Through The Escolarian, I have developed and honed a lot of skills as well as gained many experiences that I would have never had if it weren’t for the organization.

That time when it was Sportsfest 2023, and I was posting most of the live updates. It was hectic and stressful, but I learned a lot from it! Another is getting to join the DSPC for two years, and learning a lot from it.

The biggest lesson that I got from E is to take responsibility seriously. Being part of The Escolarian is fun, but you also have to be very dedicated to be an active member.

Hi, E! Thank you for being part of my journey in campus journalism. I will continue to apply my learnings from you in pursuit of journalistic excellence and freedom.

Jada Kalia Aquino (Radio Broadcaster Head)

I chose The Escolarian as my organization because I have always been passionate about journalism and broadcasting.

The best part of being a part of The Escolarian is having a platform to exercise and nurture the journalistic talents of students like me.

My most memorable experience as the head of radio broadcasting was the preparation for DSPC. Although we lacked time to practice, we managed to put up a great fight and most especially, we made friends along the way.

I will always use my pen and my voice to advocate for the minority and for social betterment.

Thank you, The Escolarian! Thank you for the experiences, lessons, and opportunities!

Ray Anne Denise Go (Assistant News & Opinion Editor)

I have always regarded journalism as one of the many platforms where I can express myself and even thought of pursuing a degree related to it when I was younger. However, as I discovered a dream of becoming a pioneer in the corporate field, I felt like I was giving up journalism, a lifelong passion of mine. As I entered senior high school, joining the school’s publication became one of my goals. Fortunately, I was able to qualify during my first year and continued with a position on the Editorial Board during my senior year.

Being friends with E has been a worthwhile experience. Throughout my time in this organization, I have developed many skills and was exposed to numerous events both inside and outside the campus.

The best part of being with The Escolarian throughout my two years in senior high school was probably the notion of being with people who have the ability to view the world, the nation, and its underlying social issues the same way I do. Collectively, we had a goal to pursue integrity and excellence through the articles we wrote. Another thing that I cannot forget is the friendships I have made within this organization. It has never been a dull moment when everyone was together, and that, I think, is one of the reasons that made my journey as a student journalist and writer most worthwhile.

My most memorable experience with the Editorial Board was probably when we attended Inkblots at the University of Santo Tomas last January. From our never-ending laughs in the van to having the opportunity to listen to renowned speakers and journalists, it was surely an unforgettable experience for me.

I have learned countless lessons throughout my journey with The Escolarian, whether from writing or lessons I could apply to my future endeavors. Yet, if I were to be asked for a lesson that stuck with me throughout my experience, it probably is the lesson of being vocal and outward about what you think is right, and how simple articles discussing such issues could change and enlighten the minds of many.

To E, thank you for giving me the chance to pursue my dream of publishing articles and providing me a platform to express things I could probably not put into words verbally. To my fellow friends of E who are now graduates, my warmest congratulations to you all. I wish you the best in your future undertakings. To Sir Raymond, our technical adviser, no words can ever express how grateful I am for the lifelong lessons you have imparted to us.

To the next friends of E, I wish you nothing but the best. Buckle up, as many memorable moments are in store for you. Remember that being part of the publication is a great power to have, and during your stay, you will not just find colleagues and co-members, but a family and meaningful friendships that will surely be cherished until the day it is your turn to write your experiences like us, and up until the immediate future. Lagi’t lagi, para sa malayang pamamahayag! 💙💛

Jessie Jillianne Racoma (Assistant Features Editor)

I've always had a passion for writing essays and poems. So, when I was in grade 11, I participated in Pagsulat ng Lathalain during the Buwan ng Wika Celebration. At the time, I was unaware of The Escolarian. Until Sir Ced, my class adviser at that moment, suggested that I join an organization that I had no idea I would enjoy being a part of. Stating, "Sali ka rin sa Escolarian, yung school publication natin din. Para lalo mahasa 'yung pagsusulat mo," it undoubtedly improved my writing abilities. With the assistance of the previous Editorial Board and Sir Raymond, I was able to learn the approach I will take when writing various articles. And, just to let you know, I also learned how to copy read, and write headlines from The Escolarian and Ma'am Marly.

As a friend of E, I would say that it opened my eyes to the fact that it is not only the mouth that speaks and fights for what is right but also the written words. I've had the opportunity to write about topics that I care deeply about, cover events, and even compete outside the school. Being a part of this organization has allowed me to make many new friends, whom I will cherish and keep in touch with even though we do not attend the same college. So, with these, The E surely has a place in my psyche.

The best part about being a part of this organization was that, aside from writing and collaborating with co-writers, the chikahan sessions strengthened our bond even more.

It was when we went to UST to participate in Inkblots 2023 where we heard a lot of media professionals discuss the field of artificial intelligence, including KARA DAVID HERSELF!

It is not always simple for someone to come up with a topic; ngayon ko napatunayan na totoo ang writer's block, akala ko dati eme eme lang siya. However, during my stay at The Escolarian, I was able to personally experience it. Kaya I am always telling myself na mag hinay-hinay and chill lang so that hindi ma-pressure 'yung utak ko to think too much.

Just to share, I was once scared for my writings to be posted on any other social media platforms (I am scared of criticism and judgement). But, because of The Escolarian and my write-ups being praised by people, ako na ngayon ang naga-approach na magsusulat ako for The E.

So, my only piece of advice to the incoming editorial board and staffers is to enjoy the process and, of course, those whom you get to spend it with. I know this upcoming year will be difficult because there will be many obstacles, but I am confident you will overcome them. As we always say, "lagi't lagi para sa malayang pamamahayag!"

Deanne Faith Manalo (Assistant Sci-tech Editor)

Since elementary school, writing has been a passion of mine. When I discovered that CEIS had a writing club, The Escolarian, I eagerly seized the opportunity to join. Being part of E feels like finding a new family at school. I've made new friends, learned so much, and had experiences with The Escolarian that I'll always treasure.

Being part of The Escolarian has been incredibly fulfilling because of the diverse opportunities and knowledge it has provided. It's not just about making new friends; it's about gaining valuable experiences that have enriched my understanding and passion for writing and journalism.

One of the most memorable moments during my time on E's Editorial Board was attending the Inkblots seminar at the University of Santo Tomas. This event was not only a valuable learning experience on AI but also gave me the opportunity to meet prominent figures in our country, such as Ms. Kara David, Mr. Ed Lingao, and Cedrick Juan. The knowledge I gained from this seminar was enriching, and it is an experience that I will forever cherish.

Being part of the Editorial Board gave me tons of lessons. I have learned the significance of teamwork in ensuring that our work achieves the highest quality possible. Additionally, I also understood the importance of being responsible in every article we write, knowing that our audience extends beyond our school. Most importantly, my passion for journalism has been solidified as it allows us to voice our opinions and inform others about global events. These experiences have deeply influenced me and will stay with me throughout my life.

As I reflect on my time with E, my heart is filled with gratitude for all of the knowledge and opportunity this organization gave me. I am so thankful to be able to join the Editorial Board because it sharpened my skills in writing and also enriched my understanding of the power of storytelling. Moreover, I am especially grateful to our thoughtful adviser, Sir Raymond, whose guidance and wisdom have left a lasting impact on me. His teachings not only broadened my understanding but also opened doors to various learning opportunities. Additionally, I will never forget our post-exam chill sessions which provided unforgettable moments and allowed us on the Editorial Board to bond and get to know each other better. My time with E not only enhanced my academic and personal growth. It also ignited a lasting passion for journalism within me.

Hershey Mishka Ching (Assistant Team Lead, Photojournalism)

Since I was in 7th grade, I have been in a campus journalism organization. I was an active participant until they stopped letting students go out because of quarantine. Because of that, they removed the photojournalism part of the school publication, and I couldn't be a photographer anymore. I pursued my other passions like graphic design, so I joined our computer organization back in junior high. I also joined the choir because I love singing.

When I graduated junior high, I enrolled and got into Centro Escolar Integrated School Malolos (now my alumni school). I didn't know what to expect from their extracurriculars because I didn't have many connections there (only two relatives who studied there). But during a meeting where they introduced the organizations, my heart was drawn to one with positions for photographers. I immediately locked onto that org and always wanted to join it from then on.

During my time at CEIS, club registration came around. I told my friend I really, really wanted to join this org, but I thought I might be out of time. The deadlines for the "entrance exams" for the organizations were all jumbled in my mind, hehe. She said she knew the advisor and could refer me, so I might still have a chance to join. Eagerly, I went with her and talked to the advisor. Sir gave me a chance to get in and explained how to take the written and practical exams.

I don't remember what score I got, but I passed both! Later, when the results for passers came out, I was super surprised. I actually passed for The Escolarian, not the Alakdan like I thought I was trying out for. It was a huge surprise, but in the end, I was happy. I got into the campus publication, the same publication I didn't even know existed! I thought Alakdan was the only photography org I could join, but by the end of senior high, I could conclude I made the right mistake that school year. I decided to use my passion for photography as a tool to spread awareness and ignite school spirit.  Instead of focusing solely on hard facts, I aimed to capture the essence of our school life; the challenges, the triumphs, the friendships, and the fun. My goal was to create images and stories that would resonate with my peers, informing them about important happenings while also fostering a sense of community and belonging within Centro Escolar. Through my photography, I wanted to connect with students and make them feel like their voices and experiences mattered. Like I said in my last note on the Escolarian's first meeting where The Esco members SY. 2022-2023 first met each other the question I believe was "Why The Escolarian?", "I choose to pursue photojournalism because I have a passion for taking photos so why not use it to good use."

Being friends with E is one of the core memories I will cherish forever. The experience I gained during my SHS time with E has provided valuable lessons, memories, learning curves, successes, and fulfillment. There were many times I almost gave up due to health problems like asthma and fainting episodes, but my passion remained ignited.  I am incredibly thankful that I didn't give up on the challenges I faced because this experience with E wasn't just "an organization in my SHS," but "the" family that molded my growth throughout senior high school.

The best part of being part of The Escolarian (E) was making memories while also doing what I love; photography. It was a bonus to create fun memories while pursuing my passion. I thought of it as a side quest within a side quest, where I acquired valuable 'power-ups' – knowledge and skills – to use in my future endeavors as a student and a person.

Being part of the publication bestowed upon me both power and responsibility. Wielding this responsibility brought pressure, but it also left a fulfilling sense of accomplishment after completing a task.

The camaraderie with my fellow staff members and the board left an indelible mark on my life.  In essence, perhaps the best part was everything that transpired within the organization with my colleagues and friends. <33

Perhaps the most unforgettable experience was when the editorial board conducted private interviews with the SSC candidates and their respective party lists. It was my first time interviewing not only individual candidates but also entire party lists. We interviewed all the party lists and heard their responses firsthand. This responsibility weighed heavily on us, as we were tasked with scrutinizing each candidate to help the school or campus select the most suitable individuals for the SSC. While it was a first-time experience for me, it was also incredibly memorable. The intensity of the process was balanced by the exhilaration of making a genuine contribution. The entire experience (hanggang) of SIPATLAWIN was both memorable and rewarding. I took immense pride in how the editorial board successfully organized and executed the event. (Nagustuhan ko yung experience and kung paano ang kinalabasan nito in the end). Ang galing ng Editorial Board!

One of the most valuable lessons I learned is the concept of resilience. Just as a window opens when a door closes, challenging situations often present new opportunities. When faced with setbacks, it's important to maintain a positive outlook and believe that better days are ahead. And if you can't find an open window, don't be afraid to take the initiative and create your own path.

Another key lesson is the importance of proactiveness. When opportunities arise, seize them! Don't wait for things to happen; take action and pursue your goals. Even when facing challenging problems, remember that a temporary break to strategize is far more productive than giving up entirely.

This experience also underscored the value of community. When the weight of a task feels overwhelming, it's crucial to remember that you're not alone. During my time with The Escolarian, I learned to rely on the support and guidance of my friends and peers.

Finally, I gained a newfound appreciation for the importance of confidence. Having struggled with self-doubt in the past, my involvement with The Escolarian, especially on the editorial board, helped me develop greater confidence. It's a lesson I’ll continue to cherish, as I believe it can benefit everyone.

To E: Stand tall, be true to yourselves, and give everything your best shot. The future may be uncertain, but our efforts can pave the way. We can't control everything, but we can control our actions. E isn't just about creating a voice (mamamahayag) – it's about enjoying the journey, not fearing failure. Keep stepping forward, no matter the distance. As long as you keep moving, laban!

Marc Laurence Nada (News and Opinion Writer)

Before, when I was in junior high school and 11th Grade, I was very hesitant to join any student publication.

“Losing this competition doesn’t make you less of a journalist,” sabi ko sa sarili ko nung natalo ako. Salamat, E!

Aaron Marky Tayug (Editorial Writer)

I seek to broaden my understanding of journalism, having served as a journalist from fifth to tenth grade.

The most rewarding aspect of being a member of the Escolarian is the freedom to express my thoughts as an opinion writer.

What I can share with my junior staffers is to seize every moment and not be afraid to express their thoughts as opinion writers. It is essential to maintain formality and seek valid information, rather than relying solely on emotions.

Zaynnah Trias (Editorial Writer)

Writing has always been my passion, so it has always been in my mind to join The Escolarian as my organization for my final years of high school. Expressing myself in words is always a source of joy and my favorite form of self-expression. Although self-expression was my initial purpose in joining The Escolarian, I found greater purpose inside the organization as I learned that there are more pressing things and societal issues that need to be scrutinized and magnified for the whole student body to see. Being friends with E certainly eradicated the selfish interests inside my heart, and replaced it with a more radical joy that comes with sacrificing my own interests to serve and fulfill a greater role in our society.

The best part of being a part of The Escolarian would be the tiring days filled with pending write-ups, events coverage, meetings, and all of the other responsibilities inside the organization because no matter how tiring those days are, I know that I like what I’m doing, and I do them of my own accord. It feels nice to have such a responsibility placed on my shoulders because those experiences helped me grow in terms of writing, socializing, and time management. Above all, nothing would replace the pleasure of seeing my articles published in social media, knowing that people would read them and become more socially aware by the end of my final paragraph. There is an irreplaceable satisfaction in serving, and I am very glad that I got to experience it with The Escolarian.

Joining The Escolarian at the beginning of my grade 12 journey may have seemed like something trivial and a pastime for a naive student like me. However, looking back at it now, I thank myself for taking that daunting step and challenging my limits, there and then. My final year in high school wouldn’t be as fulfilling as it is now, if not for the challenges and roles given to me by this esteemed organization. I am immensely grateful to The Escolarian for instilling in me the value of discipline and journalistic excellence. This might mark the end of my journey as The Escolarian’s Editorial Writer, but the learnings and the experience I have acquired within this organization will remain seated in my heart and shall continue to flourish even as I step foot in college and the real world. Good luck to the future staffers, and may the passion for learning, writing, and serving this institution and country continue to persist in the coming generations. Lagi’t lagi, para sa malayang pamamahayag!

Trisha Mhei Cruz (Feature Writer)

I chose The Escolarian because I love writing and have been involved in journalism since elementary school. It was a great experience being friends with E. I learned a lot of valuable lessons and definitely improved my skills.

The best part of being part of The Escolarian is that I get to improve my skills and make new friends who share similar interests.

To E, I can say that you’re one of the best parts of my Senior High School journey. I may not have been very active, but I learned a lot and had fun. I am thankful that I got to be friends with E, even for a short period of time. To those who are friends with E or are aspiring to be friends with E, please enjoy and make the most of it. :)

Jeane Macxene Franco (Feature Writer)

I chose to join this organization because my heart always knew The E would treat its staffers as family. Aside from that, pursuing journalistic excellence has always been something I wanted to do as a student. Being friends with E exposed me to different talents and helped me discover my skills.

It never felt like I was doing org work, but rather doing something that truly makes my heart full and happy. With E, I get to pursue journalism and help speak for the voiceless. The E also helped me share my talent and join the Radio Broadcasting team.

Back when I was in Grade 11, I already showed my interest in joining The E. During the practical phase of the examination, however, I did not submit any entry making my interest in joining invalid. I got too anxious with the fact that I might not be able to meet the expectations of the organization and keep up with the schoolwork. In Grade 12, many people encouraged me to join The E. This time, I got accepted and received a high score for both the practical and written phases of the examination. I want to thank The E for granting me a second chance to prove myself as a student journalist. Aside from writing several articles, I also enjoyed the many things I experienced while being a part of this wonderful family. I got to have a glimpse of myself being a sportscaster or a courtside reporter during the MACPRISA event. A few months later, I got to represent our Alma Mater in both the District and Division Schools Press Conference as part of the English Radio Broadcasting team. I knew I always had the talent in that field but The E enhanced those skills and soon made me better. Overall, I am very thankful to be a part of this family during my final high school year. It was definitely a short stay but the memories made and the dreams reached will forever have a special place in my heart. Thank you, The E for helping me make my journalism dream come true.

Eloisa Aluit (Science and Technology Writer)

I decided to join The Escolarian because I wanted to reignite my passion for writing and expressing myself through words. I believed that by doing so, I could not only help myself engage in what I love but also find ways to effectively communicate information to others.

The most rewarding aspect of being a part of this organization is witnessing various milestones in an Escolarian's journey and having the opportunity to raise awareness about what's happening around them.

I've always wanted to be part of The Escolarian, but I've hesitated to join many times due to my lack of self-esteem. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be friends with E, and although I don't have many memories to share, I hope that this organization will continue to strive for journalistic excellence and achieve even more milestones in the future.

Alexa Delos Santos (Science and Technology Writer)

I was encouraged and inspired by my friends who are also part of this organization. Being friends with E was so fun where I learned a lot and it helped me to improve my skills especially, in writing.

The most memorable memory I want to share is when I was able to join the inkblots where we learned a lot of things and we enjoyed that event.

Ezra Nelsen Dizon (Sports Writer)

I've been a campus journalist since the 4th grade, and since then, I wanted to use my voice and my skills to write dahil gusto kong maghatid ng mga balita sa kapwa ko estudyante. However, in all honesty, nung una, sumali lang ako dahil alam kong matagal ko na siyang ginagawa. Matagal na akong nagsusulat, itutuloy ko nalang siya. But as I go along with my journey with The E, natututo ako lalo. Mas nagugustuhan ko ang ginagawa ko. Hindi lang ako nagsusulat dahil trabaho ko siya ilang isang campus journalist, pero nagsusulat ako para sa ibang tao. I write with purpose.

Being part of The Escolarian is a big task. Our job is to keep our co-Escolarians updated with the events and happenings inside and outside the campus. Yes, it is difficult, but we signed up for this! It’s fulfilling to be a part of The Escolarian, especially when covering big events.

Hi, The E! It was fun to write to you! I am truly grateful that you have allowed me to improve, influence, and be open-eyed. Let's continue to be friends for life. Lagi't lagi para sa malayang pamamahyag.

Franchezca Denisse Ilagan (Sports Writer)

I chose The E because my passion is writing articles. The best part of being with The E is that you can serve the school while pursuing your passion, which is writing articles.

Kimberly Teodoro (Radio Broadcaster)

Ever since I joined this organization, there’s always been a goal that has pushed me; is to be able to contribute to the Escolarian community through my passion for journalism. Through being friends with E, I have learned so much including how can I be better in this field.

The best part of being in this organization is being exposed to a lot of opportunities which have helped me showcase my skills and improve them even more.

My experiences with E, such as being involved in broadcasting competitions have allowed me to realize my potential and at the same time create broad connections with others who share the same interests as me.

Alyana Flores (Copyreader)

I always had the passion to demonstrate my lifelong commitment to upholding my values. Throughout my high school years, I have participated in several activities and clubs, but the Escolarian stood out to me. Following my Grade 12 opportunity to join SSG, which I, unfortunately, was unable to take part in, the Escolarian offered me a position that has allowed me to apply my journalistic mastery. I thought, "This is a great opportunity for me to bring out my academic abilities." as I considered the Escolarian to be a well-known and influential organization among the readers. Simply keeping up with the daily school news on its FB page and reading articles on significant topics written by incredible writers — I would love to see how it feels to be part of this team myself. With that, I pursued my position as a copyreader.

My friend, Chelsea, a fellow copyreader, encouraged me to be confident in my work and supported me throughout the process. Knowing myself, I would always exert my best backdoors because I struggled with self-confidence. But, with high aspirations, I believed that joining here would help me push my limits into something worthwhile. I was still eager to make the most of my abilities during my last year of high school and contribute what I was good at to this institution.

The Escolarian reflects that very purpose. It has helped me gain strength, teamwork, and discipline. But, most especially, I am proudly able to carry what I've learned from this experience on my next journey.

Francine Dianne Cardenas (Layout Artist)

Back then, my primary goal was to contribute to the school publication and broaden my area of improvement. However, my time at The Escolarian provided me with more than just experiences. I also made unexpected friends and developed a supportive circle that will help you find the keys to unlocking new doors of opportunity.

The best part about being friends with E is the organization's boundless opportunities. As a member of The Escolarian, you’ll find yourself taking unexpected paths that lead to nothing but journalistic

E, thank you for the wonderful experience. My role in this organization may come to an end, but I will always stand by the values you have instilled in me. For future staffers, as you become friends with E, always remember your purpose and uphold the standards of journalistic excellence.

Hazel Joyce Jacob (Social Media Manager)

I chose The Escolarian as my organization because I want to hone my skills and contribute my knowledge to my fellow Escolarians. Being friends with E made me realize how important it is to come out of my comfort zone, the opportunities that the organization gave me to showcase my abilities allowed me to strive harder despite all the challenges I faced.

The best part of being a member of The Escolarian is getting to meet new people who share the same interests and passion as mine as well as the events that our organization has covered which allowed us to strengthen our bond.

Being a member of The Escolarian for 2 years was one of the highlights of my Senior High School life. There was a time when I doubted my capabilities as a member of the organization, but I am truly grateful for the memories and opportunities that The Escolarian has granted me. I hope that the next batch will do a great job as well and continue to flourish our beloved organization in pursuit of journalistic excellence.

Darlene Claire Angeles (Photojournalist)

I joined The E as a volunteer last MaCiPriSA, and some of the perks I liked about that fact are the opportunities like DSPC.

Lara Ysabel Barredo (Photojournalist)

I choose The Escolarian as my organization para mas mahasa ko ‘yung journalistic skills. Since I'll take mass communication as my course in college I want to be a part of an organization na may kinalaman sa kurso at trabaho na kukuhanin ko rin which is to be a "news reporter". Being a friend with E helped me to realize that being a photojournalist is not only about just taking pictures, we should capture the photos with stories and convey that story to the audience by just looking at them.

‘Pag may pangyayari sa paaralan, agad na magko-cover ang photojournalist staffers ng The Escolarian tapos kukuha ng mga larawan. Most of the time, ‘pag nakikita ng mga mag-aaral na nagpi-picture kami, nagri-request sila na kuhanan sila at ipo-post naman ‘yung pictures in the FB page of The Escolarian. As a photojourn, I feel happy and proud kapag nakikita ko na masaya rin ‘yung mga kinuhanan ko ng pictures. And I only get to feel that by being friends with E.

John Jinsie Balinay (Photojournalist)

I chose to join The Escolarian because I wanted to showcase and experience the highlights of the school year through images. Being friends with E has been a heartwarming experience, wherein everyone acts as one happy family without having anyone feel left out.

The best part of being a part of the Escolarian is that whenever events are happening at CEIS, I get to showcase the different POVs of the students through the eyes of the camera.

A highlight of being a part of The Escolarian was that we could showcase our expertise, not only to CEIS but to other schools as well. One such example would be that we were able to hold livestreams of sports events during MACIPRISA, which paved the way for other schools to also hold streams.

Isaiah Claren Gutierrez (Photojournalist)

I chose The Escolarian because I saw that it is a group of collaboration and a hub of collective improvement for the purpose of spreading what is true about our surroundings. Two of the best things about joining are the opportunities and the people. I am grateful for the learnings and memories created with The E!

Francine Klydine Ramas (Photojournalist)

I have always had a heart for journalism as a kid. I believe journalism was stirred in me from my elementary years in school as I competed in press conferences. But then, coming from a school without an organization that focuses on journalism, I had the longing for it since I had nowhere to put my interest elsewhere. Hearing about The Escolarian was more than good news as at last, I would be doing what I love most—photography and journalism. Being friends with E was both a privilege and an honor. Muli’t muli para sa malayang pagpapahayag.

If I am to put it briefly, the best part of being a part of The Escolarian is three;  being able to keep doing what I love while being on campus, serving my fellow Escolarians, and working with people who share the same passion as me.

Personally, my journey as a member of The Escolarian made me realize three things. First, God would make a way for you, whether it seemed impossible or not, if you let Him. I was not an active member of the organization until my senior year because I kept putting myself in a place where I did not belong—applying as a feature writer when, in fact, it is photojournalism I love. I also realized that being able to use my god-given gift to serve people is a privilege that everyone does not gets to experience and do. Lastly, starting over does not mean you lost; it is rather a sign of victory, as you are willing to keep on trying however long and whatever it takes until you know you did well. With that, I am forever grateful for being one of the friends of E.

Ma. Ellery Brienne Santiago (Photojournalist)

I chose The Escolarian as my organization since I wanted to meet new friends especially due to my experience with journalism at my previous school. I saw it as an opportunity to grow as a person and a journalist.

The best part was meeting so many friends and acquaintances that I bonded with during the 2-year stay at CEIS. I also enjoyed representing the school in various extracurricular competitions, these experiences contributed to the person I am now.

I thank The E for all the memories and experiences I gained during those 2 years, I will always treasure every interaction in my heart. And to all future journalists, good luck and don’t forget to always fight for what is right. Lagi’t lagi para sa malayang pamamahayag, The Escolarian!

Feminiena Marie San Antonio (Photojournalist)

Sumali ako ng The Escolarian because gusto ko mag-try ng something new during my stay in CEIS as a Senior High School. Hindi kasi ako pala-sali sa mga orgs and extra-curricular actvities sa dati kong school so nung nalaman ko yung about sa mga orgs dito sa CEIS, why not kako mag try ako.

I got to capture happiness and celebration of students and people in CEIS. Sa pag-picture ko sa mga events sa CEIS na pinepreserve ko yung mga emotions na na-experience nila, tapos naii-share ko pa ito sa ibang tao.

May your future works soar higher and reach many audiences! Para sa malayang pamamahayag, E

Edrelle Caparas (Editorial Contributor)

Choosing the escolarian made me explore my abilities to write and expand my knowledge in journalism.

The best part of being an escolarian is that it gave me the privilege to write for my alma mater and participate in school events which I never did before.

Jacqueline Florendo (Feature Contributor)

I chose The Escolarian mainly because I was a member of a similar organization back in my previous school and had the first impression (which I was right about) that responsible and hardworking students join here, so I wanted to be associated with them. Gaining friends and experiences regarding writing were some of the best parts of taking part in The E.

I hope you all continue to write articles with passion, making sure that they are factual and relevant to social issues, and also to spread awareness to the people around you. Don't forget to have fun while doing so!

From writing the first page of your chapter rooted in the burning passion for journalism or a thirst for something new to now, reminiscing the core values and memorable memories gained. Those countless meetings that became a breather from the suffocating responsibilities, the events filled with excitement and worries, the convention embarks on remarkable lessons. Lastly, the friendships formed, or family, rather. The legacy you created paved the way for the friends of E to be motivated to keep the passion and mission burning.

As the path leads to numerous opportunities, may your heart never grow distant from being the eyes and voice that transpires only the truth.

“Lagi’t lagi, para sa malayang pamamahayag!”
