October 15, 2021

All for empowerment. October welcomes us decked out in pink ribbons, faced of buildings illuminating pink hues, campaigns, and advocacies screaming a powerful shade of pink signaling the month for Breast Cancer Awareness. An annual event committed to raising awareness, educating one another, and raising funds for life-saving research and support. A movement amplified by many all over the world as this plays a crucial role in clearing the air to the cultural discussion around cancer.

As the ever so performative and dynamic youth that we are, how exactly can we advocate and take part in this movement? Here are a few simple things you can do to participate in this event:

1. Educate yourself

Before you get involved in a plethora of activities concerning Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you must first gain an insight as to what breast cancer is. Research about its background, the symptoms and signs, and how it affects those who were diagnosed. Familiarize yourself, so in this way, you can better support the movement and enlighten yourself and other people about it as well.

2. Check up on yourself

Perform a self-examination by doing a breast self-exam, feel and check for lumps in the breast and armpit area. It is a crucial step for breast cancer detection. The earlier you notice abnormalities, the chances of it being treated successfully increase tenfold. The Department of Health urges women to do breast self-examination and seek early consultation if anything troubles them.

3. Practice a Healthier Lifestyle

Various factors affect or heighten the risks of developing breast cancer, and one's lifestyle and diet should be inspected and adjusted to decline the probability of developing the illness. So remember to keep a close watch on the scale, eat your greens, maximize your physical activity, and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

4. Donate to Nonprofit groups

A significant way to advocate for this cause is by donating to nonprofit groups and organizations that endorse breast cancer treatment research or for a specific cause related to it. Donations, big or small, contribute to the advancement of our abilities to seek further knowledge about breast cancer for the greater good.

In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.” Accepting vulnerability is never easy. It takes a lot of time and willpower to absorb and fully comprehend what you are dealing with. It can be draining both mentally and physically. May this month be a reminder to commend those who have braved through the battle, those who face it with courage and valiance, and to give praise and remembrance to the fallen ones who showed resilience till the very end.

Let October and its hues of pink cast light upon each and every single one of us as we fight together with those who are battling cancer. Together, we are herculean- a driving force for change, striving for more, making a difference.
