The Edge of a Coin

Whenever I had a coin in hand, I always thought of flipping it around — watching how the events would unfold in this tiny silver I have. Will it be tail? Or will it be head? Will I win over my assumptions or not? It was amusing the fact that I continued to play with it. But, as time passed, I realized how deeper this flipping coin got.

You see, the coin has two sides. Head and tail. Maybe good or bad. A word and an antonym of it. What I am trying to say is it is one yet different. They are one, but both have different values or meanings. And so does a human. Humans, I believe, are one of the most exciting and versatile creatures in the world. They are living things yet can be used in a story, movies, the reason behind a song and etcetera. And, we all would not be able to deny that in our personalities, characteristics, or whichever you call it – we all have two sides like how a coin has. Head and tail equal good and evil. When you grew up being kind to others, rational and had a strong sense of justice – the good side. When you always beat up others, saying profane words and anything that is just undeniably and considered mad – the bad side. Maybe, this classification was just created in our social norms. But have you ever thought about the hidden side of a coin? The middle, not the good nor not the bad. Just the middle. The very edge of the coin. According to the United States Mint, there are different edges seen in a coin. It might be plain, reeded, lettered, and decorated. So, the “middle” side might be plain. Just neutral to bad and good, being their referee between rounds. Or the halt and the last voice of conscience before switching sides. Maybe it is reeded, like driving in a series of small bumps with no end. Casually switching sides but still having a sane control over the two. To live and to survive. But, it is also incredible to see a lettered middle. Where experiences, tales, values, and any pieces of advice you will ever see. A story of one’s life yet to be told. Engraved in their minds and never fading memories. This lettered edge is one of their strengths in our generation and times because they are strengthened by scars left after the battles in life. Lastly, the decorated middle. This one, I guess, is the most beautiful and ironic thing in the world. Because it is decorated with things like white and black, blue and red or hearts and knives. It is designed like a hall of fame full of completely contrasting things. But, it is peaceful—no battles, no good and bad – just the equal.

These four types of edges in a coin, the various “middle” sides – it is our lives. There are people who live as either good or bad. They live on one side of the coin. Some people switch sides as they face situations in life. They use this ability to adapt, protect, and learn from the things around them. Then, the lettered people. They are shaped by wisdom. Their knowledge and experience helped shape and mold their ethics, beliefs, and persona. They are persons who live and listen to others as they try to shape and accept themselves. And, the decorated people, which could be you or me. We take both sides. We both deal with it that we are neither good nor bad. We know how to live in the middle, with the two sides supporting us. These edges are reminders of how people shaped their identities. It may show their backgrounds — the main reason behind it. Or the pain they hide, physical or not.

It is a fact that there are two sides to a coin. But we ought not to forget the edge in between. Flipping a coin might not end up with the edge as a result, but it is still there. Heads or tails, whichever it is, remember that in your life, choose what chooses you as you are the captain of your fate.
