Bridging the Worlds of Journalists: Voices Beyond Borders

The worlds of journalism and pageantry each found their special purpose in narrative and the projection of one specific image. Journalists strive for journalistic excellence, as their articles provide factual information and stories that might inevitably contribute to a person's perspective. In contrast to pageants, which entail storytelling that can be projected through performances and personal experiences, these participants represent principles and personas to the audience, regardless of the fact that people consider visuals and performances on stage as their form of expression.

Being a journalist and a pageant contestant illustrates a combination of glitz and brains. These two significant people behind The Escolarian showed beauty and sophistication, while their dedication to the distribution of accurate information demonstrates an exceptional combination of grace and journalistic rectitude.

The Escolarian's very own Editor-in-Chief, Joanna Chiney Kaye Santos, and Associate Editor, Precious Sabine Pinto, participated in Ms. United Nations 2023 last Friday, October 27.

Precious Sabine Pinto serves as Ms. Czech Republic for STEM 12-F-CSS, while, Joanna Chiney Kaye Santos represents STEM 12-G-CSS as Ms. Wales.

Aside from their grace and sophistication on the runway, they possess the skill and mastery of balance. Despite having busy schedules, heavy workloads, and files of events, they still managed to deliver talent and professionalism as representatives of their respective classes in Ms. United Nations 2023.

Considering that this was her first time entering the world of pageantry, Ms. Pinto took it as a great learning experience. With an intellect like hers, opportunities are bound to open their doors and offer themselves to challenge her wit and strength as a woman capable of navigating through the wonders of life. Although she did not make it into the final round, to be able to stand confidently on stage, with little experience in pageantry, is enough to make her family and class proud and happy. Precious, living up to her name, is indeed a piece of art carrying poise and elegance in whatever she puts her mind to.

As an all-rounder student, Ms. Santos faces different matters on a daily basis. With her being the representative of her class in Ms. United Nations 2023, she sacrificed a lot of her time in order to perfect the flair of being unstoppable on the runway. She offered her blood, sweat, and tears to be able to claim her title as Ms. United Nations 2023 1st Runner-Up. Chiney is the true definition of strength and perseverance — steadily working her way up, one step at a time, as she reaches her goal. On the runway, she depicts tranquility while optimizing her wisdom to deliver words worthy of display.

During the question and answer portion for the Top 5 finalists, Ms. Santos took this as her chance to manifest her excellence in the field of journalism. She was asked, “Do you agree with declaring war on drugs as a way to eliminate illegal drugs in the country? Why or why not?”

She answered, “I believe that the war on drugs was really not that helpful when it was implemented because it ended a lot of innocent lives, even children, men, and women, and other people. And I believe that a lot of people were led to misinformation and there are many things that we can do to eliminate war, to eliminate drugs in the Philippines, and not by killing innocent lives of people.”

Her awareness of societal issues as a journalist influenced her response in the question and answer portion. She answered the question given to her with confidence and conviction — using her knowledge and ability to deliver factual information. As a news journalist, this enables her to present a well-informed viewpoint that easily sets many social concerns, thereby, defining her response; it goes beyond the surface of knowledge.

She amplifies a voice that is eager to merge the impact of journalism with pageantry. Indeed, "there are three responses to a piece of design - yes, no, and wow! Wow is the one to aim for."
