Bittersweet Threads of Familiar

By Precious Sabine Pinto

October 2, 2023

In the patterns of our existence, many of us find ourselves inadvertently ensnared within the comforting threads of the familiar. We immerse ourselves in the tasks we know well, the ones in which we excel, thereby skirting the uncharted territories beyond our comfort zones. However, within this comfort zone lies a hidden truth: a quiet regret.

During his valedictory speech last July 21, 2023, Edsel Suhayon Codoy, UP Cebu’s top graduate and Summa Cum Laude, confessed, “My biggest regret in UP Cebu was actually studying hard and doing nothing else.”

A poignant reflection in just 14 words that encapsulated both the bittersweet joy of academic excellence and the haunting echo of missed experiences.

His candid admission lays bare the inner struggle many students face—a tug-of-war between the desire for academic success and the yearning for a broader, more holistic life experience. While his academic prowess was undeniable, Edsel's fear of falling short, of not living up to the expectations set by his own high standards, acted as invisible shackles.

Within the hallowed halls of UP Cebu, where opportunities for growth and self-discovery abounded, Edsel often chose the path of least resistance. Opportunities slipped through his fingers as he declined organization memberships and nominations, and he stuck to a well-worn path, socializing primarily within the classroom.

However, his story takes a hopeful turn. The realization that he had been inhibiting his own growth finally dawned upon him. With newfound clarity, he's begun to shatter the walls of his comfort bubble. He's discovering how to break free from self-doubt and view failures as priceless learning experiences.

Today, he stands in the midst of his second internship, bravely venturing into the realm of technology, an area he admits to knowing little about. His story exemplifies the value of introspection and the bravery required to explore new territory. To quote his own words of modesty, "I have so much more to learn and so much more to try."

Edsel's words offer sage advice and a rallying cry to all who aspire to grow beyond their perceived limitations. "I am saying this to encourage everyone to take calculated risks and embrace a growth mindset," he imparts. His message is clear: be kind to yourself, cultivate self-compassion, and seize the opportunities that come your way. Ultimately, this journey is about living with no regrets, leaving no stone unturned, and embracing the endless possibilities that life presents.

Let us not confine ourselves within the walls of the places that we know of, for life's most remarkable stories are not scripted within the boundaries of our comfort zones. It is in the audacious pursuit of the uncharted, the daring embrace of the uncertain, that we truly come alive.

To regret deeply is to live afresh, to acknowledge that every stumble and misstep is a catalyst for growth. Therefore, let's not miss the opportunity to explore beyond our known horizons, to tread into unfamiliar territories, and as we do, let's weave a life filled with tales of bravery, perseverance, and an insatiable hunger for fresh encounters.

But above all, savor the beauty of the present moment. Life is a series of fleeting moments, and it's easy to get caught up in the rush of daily life. Pause, breathe, and take in the world around us. Find joy in the simple things—a sunrise, a shared smile, a warm embrace.

As we venture into the unknown, remember that the journey is as important as the destination. Live each day as if it were a grand adventure, for it is in the journey beyond our comfort zones that we truly discover the things that make life worth living.
